We are offering Co-op student placements in our Health Physics Department, Dosimetry Section which is responsible for radiation dosimetry and environmental radioactivity measurements for Ontario Power Generation. This position is based in Whitby, Ontario, which is located approximately 50 kilometres east of Toronto, Ontario.


As the successful candidates you may have the opportunity to assist in a variety of activities, which may include the following:
  • work with the laboratory manager and lead technologists to develop, improve and test Visual Basic programs (MS Access and MS Excel), edit MS Excel macros and develop MS Access databases for administrative and analytical applications.
  • developing and writing technical documentation for laboratory software.

We are searching for enthusiastic Computer Science or Engineering students who have successfully completed a minimum of second year and will be returning to university or college (full time) upon completion of this work term or require one final work term to graduate.

Preference will be given to those candidates who have the following qualifications:
  • Excellent communication skills, able to generate documentation in the form of technical reports.
  • Information technology skills to write Visual Basic programs (MS Excel, MS Access); edit MS macros; set up analytical instruments and associated computer links; revise, improve, test and install software for laboratory quality and analytical processes; set up spreadsheets and databases for performing mathematical calculations, statistical data analysis and for data retention.
  • Completed one post-secondary school course in statistics.
  • Appreciation for the importance of occupational safety.
  • Must be able to work well in a team setting.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety is an asset.
  • Work experience in a laboratory setting would be an asset.
