Hydro One
At Hydro One, we’ve been entrusted with one very important role. We deliver electricity safely and reliably to more than a million homes and businesses throughout Ontario. For over one hundred years, we’ve been an integral part of ensuring that the electricity that powers Ontario’s economic engine continues to flow – when it’s needed, where it’s needed. Hydro One operates and maintains 97 per cent of the transmission network in the province, carrying electricity from generating stations to local distribution companies and large industrial customers, and has Ontario’s largest distribution network. Hydro One’s world-leading grid operations centre in Barrie controls the province’s electrical grid using state-of-the-art equipment. This work is only one aspect of who we are as an organization. We are recognized for our corporate citizenship and we are doing our part to minimize the impact we have on the environment. Over the next decade, we expect to renew our transmission and distribution systems to enable Ontario’s Green Energy Act vision. As well, we do our part to educate the public about electrical safety and conservation. We also invest in local conservation initiatives, and in First Nation, Métis, and other local communities that our work touches. We strive to build good, respectful relationships and promote healthy communities and families. Our employees connect us to communities across Ontario. Not only do they care about their work, but they care about the people they are impacting. We are a team of more than 4,500 good corporate citizens. Our staff takes pride in our shared efforts, and generously contributes to an annual, employee-selected ‘charity of choice’ campaign, in addition to volunteering outside the organization. We support and respect that, and we also match individual contributions to educational institutions. At Hydro One, we respect that your work is only one aspect of who you are. We believe that you need time for the people and things that help keep you energized. And that you need support to develop your skills in order to grow. From day one, you will find that, whenever you need it, we provide exceptional training, skills development and educational assistance to help you reach your personal and career goals. This reality, along with new initiatives across the province, means there will continue to be plenty of opportunities at Hydro One. In addition to skilled trades and engineering roles, we welcome grads from Business, Computer Science and other technical disciplines, as well as experienced professionals in a variety of support roles, as needed. Approximately 70 per cent of our workforce is comprised of graduates from college technical programs and fully certified skilled trades people. Whether in our grid operations or in the field, these are the highly skilled women and men charged with keeping Ontario’s lights on, and our lines and towers safe. Electrical Technicians/Technologists, Electricians, Power Line Technicians, and Electrical Forester/Utility Arborists are just some of the skills areas we seek. All college grads go through a thorough training program of three to five years, and we have well-developed apprenticeship programs, where you can earn your Red Seal certification while on the job. We offer Electrical (Power), Civil and Mechanical Engineering grads technically challenging roles, and look to their talent, knowledge and drive to help keep the Hydro One team energized. Our two-year New Grad training and development program provides you with the opportunity to rotate through several jobs, discovering areas you most want to work in. We encourage you to get involved in many aspects of the business, including those in the field. Innovative thinkers and flexible learners will have opportunities to move into future supervisory, management, or advanced technical roles. You can also earn a Master of Engineering degree while on the job through one of our university partnerships. Each year, we welcome more than 300 students to our team. In a supportive, intellectually stimulating environment, we provide students with real work and unique opportunities to learn and contribute. We look for team players, energetic initiative-takers, and potential leaders who want to share ideas, develop new skills and benefit from our team’s invaluable expertise. Many of our current employees once worked as students at Hydro One. Most of our Co-op positions are for Engineering students, but we also draw from other disciplines, such as Computer Science and Business, as well as some college technical programs. Students not enrolled in a formal co-op program are also welcome to apply for one of our Internship or Summer Developmental positions, and still gain real work experience relating to their specific course of study.
